Evaluation

For this projected we started off with a zine workshop. A zine is most commonly a small circulation self published work of original or appropriated texts and images, usually reproduced via photocopier.

Zines are self published, small circulation, often non profit books, papers or magazines. The usually deal with topics too controversial or niche for mainsteam media, presented in an unpolised layout and unusual design.

A graphic designer I looked at is David Carson. He is best known for his innovative magazine design and use of experimental typography. He was the art director for the magazine Ray Gun, in which he employed much of the typographic and layout style for which he is known. in particular, his widely imitated aethetic defined the so call " grunge typography" era. In 1955, Carson left Ray Gun to found his own studio. He attrcted many major clients from all over the US for example : Ray Ban, Nike, Microsoft, Giorgio Armarni, NBC, Mercedes Benz.

Another graphic designer I looked at was Neville Brody, who was also a typographer and art director. He is known for his work on The Face magazine, Arena magazine, as well as for designing record covers for artists such as Cabaret Voltaire, The Bongos, Depeche Mode. Brody's experimentation with his self made sans serif typography, along with his pop art and Dadaism influence, caught the attention of music record companies such as Fetish Records and Stiff Records after he left college. His CD covers leads toward a grundy and a punk scene. Brody made his name largely popular through his revolutionary when he worked as an art director for ' The Face'.  He changed up the basic and structual rules that existed in the British culture into a more artsy and vibrant ethetic.

Another workshop we did in lesson was to create a book cover, using a penguin book template. To create this template we were given a different title each. We either got: Twist and Shout, Objects of Desire, The Divided Self, Misconception, Her Eyes, Don't Forget Me. I got given Objects of Disire, so to make my sample I made a little list of ideas I could use, I thought of: child, Love/Happiness or even something valuable like money/ diamonds. On my sample I used a picture of a diamond. I made this by using photoshop on the macs.

For my final piece I decided to create a book front and back cover using photoshop. I decided to go for a dark kind of scene with the book cover. However to improve it I would make it more complex, it is a little simple.
